I don't have a snazzy introduction prepared, but from Matt's suggestion, we should probably put our heads together on Watchmen. The film's not out yet, so I expect this thread will mostly be drunken shenanigans until the 6th.

So, have at! Grin

I'll probably see it this weekend just for the hell of it, since we're obviously going to be covering it here.  I won't be writing about it, myself, and I'm going in skeptical, but still I'm sure I'll have some fun.

Oh, wait -- no I won't.  I'm going to be watching it with Eh Steve

I'm sensing that this movie is, for most people, going to be a lukewarm failure.  probably not laughably bad but not gaining the fanboy support it really wants to either.  there'll be a few that stubbornly love it, a few that stubbornly hate it and the rest will just shrug and move onto getting excited about the next Batman movie

I need this movie to make money. I need T4 to be allowed to keep its R rating.

I just got back from the midnight showing of Watchmen with my brother. I went in with expectations approaching "gee, this film's going to be dirt." So I ended up liking what I saw on-screen. While Snyder was pretty faithful to his material (to a fault, even -- many of Rorschach's journal entries narrated over scenes didn't work well as spoken dialog), the film wasn't exactly satisfying by itself. Rather, I found satisfaction noting where what was happening on screen occurred in the graphic novel. All in all, Watchmen felt like a supplemental...yet I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Once more people have seen it, I'd like to talk about the changes to the ending. OMG

Sooo... is it too early to speculate that this could be a Zack Snyder trademark?

Does this movie even merit a roundtable? I thought it was mediocre. I guess I could pursue the angle that it's mediocre in an unusual way, but...hey, how about Dr. Manhattan's junk? I think that was the funniest thing in the whole movie. Because it made me realize that there must have been meetings about Dr. Manhattan's junk, and an animator dedicated to it. Damn, I should have checked the credits for that.

A few people were originally thinking of writing reviews on it... and since our theme for the month is Watchmen, I figured, hey, might as well put all of our eggs in one basket. If people aren't interested in writing beyond, "meh, seen it, whatevs," then this thread may die a peaceful death.

It's a bit disappointing that the biggest fans of the graphic novel (ANGUS I'M LOOKING AT YOU) are planning to sit the film out.

Overall, I found the film okay. It failed most notably when it was trying to oversell its thematics. The moments I felt it failed hardest: when it was trying to reach for moments of grand revelation (Cruddup's delivery of Dr. Manhattan's "miracle" speech) or trying to overstate its sexual themes (Hallelujah sex, c'mon, really?).

I'd be interested to hear how you thought the film was mediocre in an unusual way.

Just got back from it.

Wow.  Total filmgasm.  I thought it was pretty amazing.  Quite brilliant.  A definite contender for film of the year and possibly one of the most important films of the decade.

I'm 900 words into my review, and while at the moment I'm pouring on the vitriol, I will take time to praise portions that I really liked.  Overall, very mediocre, but more of a mixed-bag mediocre, rather than a thoroughly even, unremarkable slog with no peaks or valleys to speak of.

My buddies and I actually had a field day pitying the poor CGI team that was assigned to animate Doc Manhattan's lil' blue flash grenade, because it seemed to me that, in all the movie, it never moved.  It's like the Doc spackled it to his radioactive bulbs.  One of my friends was severely disappointed that the Vietnam sequence didn't have Manhattan swinging it into enemy combatants' heads like a an elephantine halberd.  In retrospect, I also share that disappointment.

Just got back from it.

Either the sarcasm-o-meter has exploded again, or Juss is poised to reclaim his position as the most controversial, unpredictable critic on the Internets.
